James Wade

Girton College has elected Dr James Wade as the new Vice-Mistress. James takes over from Dr Hilary Marlow, who served in the role for three years, on 1 October 2024.

Dr James Wade is a College Associate Professor and the Jane Elizabeth Martin Fellow of English Literature. His research focuses folklore, folksongs, popular writings, ritual, and orality, from the Middle Ages onwards. James also writes on medieval manuscripts and early prints, and maintains interests in cultural history, Arthurian Literature, the supernatural, Chaucer, the Gawain-Poet, and Malory.

On his appointment, James commented:

"I am honoured to follow in the footsteps of many an illustrious Vice-Mistress, from Elizabeth Welsh in 1881 to my immediate predecessor, Dr. Hilary Marlow. As Girton looks to the future, with all its groundbreaking projects and initiatives, all its ambitions for research and learning, I can’t help but count myself lucky to be part of this thriving College community."
