Funding for Prospective Postgraduates

Planning for the costs involved in studying at Cambridge

At Girton, we strive for academic excellence and widening participation.  The college is pleased to offer a good range of competitive scholarships that support new postgraduate students to pursue outstanding academic research.

Through generous donations from alumni and legacies, Girton College is able to offer a range of partially and fully funded scholarships to prospective students.  For the partially funded awards, College will endeavour to partner our award with other University partners.

Girton College's Postgraduate Research Funds are available to prospective students only, and are applied for via the University's Graduate Applicant Portal (GAP).  The main University funding deadlines, depending on the course applied for, are either 1 December or 5 January.  Applicants wishing to be considered for any of the Girton Scholarships need to tick 'Yes, I wish to apply for funding' on the 'Funding your study' page of the GAP, then ticking any scholarships you wish to apply for when those that you are eligible for appear.  There is no separate application form to complete.

Please note that we aren’t able to consider anyone for Girton funding who has applied to the University after the 5th January.

Applicants are welcome to name Girton as first or second choice college but it is not an eligibility criteria. A condition of all the Girton awards is that successful candidates would become members of Girton College.

College funding decisions are usually completed by mid-May.

For information, including how to access course deadlines, please see this section of the University’s Postgraduate Admissions website.

University composition fees are listed on the University website.  Not all courses cost the same, and it is important to make sure you have identified any additional costs associated with your specific course.  It's also important to identify the maintenance amount recommended for your course of study and be sure to include that in your budgeting.

The University Composition Fee is collected by the College and paid to the University on your behalf.  Also billed for by College are any living costs incurred in College (rental of College accommodation, food purchased from College outlets) and are payable termly.  You will receive a bill at the start of each term and at the start of the long vacation informing you what you have to pay.

You are responsible for paying your tuition fees and living costs on time and will sign a Declaration form to that effect when you are made your College offer.  The University Composition Fee is payable annually and you will receive this bill from College soon after arrival in October and it will be payable shortly after the division of Michaelmas Term (around mid-November).
