Research themes

I currently research changes in Mediterranean and British coastal ecosystems. This has involved the use of modern methods of obtaining field data such as LIDAR and digital field mapping techniques.

Recent publications include:

I was one of the first male fellows to join Girton when College went mixed in 1977 although I had supervised Girton students for several years before that.

Prior to lecturing in Cambridge, I assisted in founding the Department of Biological and Environmental Science at the University of Ulster. I have also worked as an ecological consultant variously to ARC, National Trust, DETR, English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage, and Anglian Water.

I was overseas assessor for the Project Evaluation Committee of the Japanese Institute for Humanities and Nature from 2011-2017 and I am currently a member of the assessment panel for the Independent Social Research Foundation.

In 2012, I received the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s Best Practice Award.

I am a trustee and treasurer of Franciscan Aid and also a trustee and past chair of the ACE Foundation.
