On Wednesday 1 February the Girton College Geographical Society hosted its biennial Society event for all Girton Geographers and current Geography Fellows and Students.
This virtual event started with a warm welcome and introductions by Dr Harriet Allen (Geography, 1977) Official Fellow, Tutor and Director of Studies in Geography and Education. Recent graduate Sam Allen (Geography, 2019) started the discussions with an insightful talk on A Ticking Lyme Bomb? Health Geographies in the Anthropocene. Dr Evelina Gambino, Margaret Tyler Research Fellow in Geography then talked about A future that never comes: piecing together logistical failure on the Black Sea coast.
A recording of the event can be found below.
Speakers
Sam Allen studied Geography at Girton from 2019–2022. During that time he developed an interest in the Anthropocene-health nexus, and particularly the role of anthropogenic environmental changes on vector-borne disease risk. This culminated in his dissertation, assessing the relationship between climate and land-use changes on Lyme disease incidence in Pennsylvania. Since graduating, Sam has commenced an MPhil in Population Health Sciences at Magdalene College, Cambridge, specialising in infectious diseases.
Evelina Gambino is the Margaret Tyler Research Fellow in Geography at Girton College. Her research is concerned with a situated analysis of global logistics. Working across large infrastructures in the Republic of Georgia and the South Caucasus, Evelina seeks to map the ways in which planetary projects of circulation, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, are translated into local contexts. In dialogue with feminist critiques of capitalism, her analysis highlights the different kinds of work that this translation entails.
