Betty Wood Symposium: Legacies of Enslavement

To mark the life and work of Dr Betty Wood (1945-2021), Life Fellow and pioneering historian of slavery, we welcome members of the Girton College community to a special event on Saturday 4 November 2023.

Programme Outline:

Opening remarks from The Mistress of Girton College followed by an introduction on the aims of the symposium from Dr Alastair Reid, Life Fellow and Historian.

Maggie Kalenak, researcher for the Legacies of Enslavement Committee, will present '"To think that she had not forgot them": individuals, enslavement and institutional memory work at Girton College'

  • Kia Taylor Powell, 'What does "Legacies of Enslavement" mean to you?' (A short film)
  • Edward Suckling, 'Behind Hermione: addressing Girton's history and material heritage.'
  • Nyeleti Brauer-Maxaeia, 'The exclusion of Black stories from Girton College Modern and Medieval Languages.'
  • Grace Marshall, 'Attempting archiving in the wake of slavery.'

Dr Hazel Mills, Bye-Fellow, will present 'Mapping the money, tracing connections: how the Girton Legacies project began'

All Symposium attendees are invited to a buffet reception in the Fellows Rooms from 6.30pm
