We are delighted to announce the appointment of British conductor and Girton alumnus Ben Glassberg as Musician-in-Residence at Girton College. Ben studied Music at Girton, matriculating in 2012, and later went on to study conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Known and celebrated for his work in both opera and orchestral music, Ben is currently the Music Director at the Vienna Volksoper Opera House and at the Opéra de Rouen Normandie.

Described by The Guardian as conducting with ‘irresistible panache’, Ben has made a name for himself on the global stage and conducted performances at major venues such as the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and the English National Opera. Ben has conducted orchestral concerts around the world with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others.

On his appointment Ben commented:

“I’m thrilled to be returning to Girton, a place that gave me so much support and inspiration during my time at university. There is a strong tradition of making music in so many different ways and I look forward to being a part of that. I’m very excited to be working with the next generation of young musicians to emerge from Girton, given how much impact the college had on me during those formative years.”

Dr Martin Ennis, Director of Music and Austin and Hope Pilkington Fellow at Girton, shared:

“We’re delighted to welcome Ben back to Girton as a Musician-in-Residence.  Though still young, he brings with him a wealth of experience, and I’ve no doubt that the current generation of Girton students will be inspired by his professional successes and stimulated by his coaching.  A wonderful appointment!”
