The Mistress on Tour

Did you know Girtonians are spread across 111 countries and territories around the world?

Recently, the Mistress, Dr Elisabeth Kendall, and members of the Development team have been on an exhilarating journey across land and sea to meet Girtonians, hear about their news, and share the latest updates from the College.

Closer to home, there were visits to Cardiff and Bristol, where Dr Kendall gave a talk titled ‘Making Sense of the Yemen War, the Houthis, and the Red Sea Conflict’ – a topic that has been evolving almost daily. In Cardiff, the iconic Millenium Centre was bathed in green – some say this was due to the musical Wicked, but it was a perfect backdrop for a Girton gathering! Guests were captivated by the speakers, Professor Elwen Evans KC and renowned poet Dr Gwyneth Lewis MBE, the inaugural National Poet of Wales, who penned the bilingual text on the Millennium Centre’s façade. Our heartfelt thanks to Girtonian extraordinaire Dr Carol Bell for hosting this memorable event.

Later in Michaelmas Term, the Mistress met Girtonians in Oslo at the first Girton gathering in Norway.

The tour then extended to Asia, with stops in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. In Tokyo, Girtonians joined the Mistress and the Director of Development at a festive Christmas Party with the Cambridge & Oxford Society. The dinner was preceded by a special lecture by Dr Kendall attended by HIH Princess Takamado.

Next on the itinerary, were Hong Kong and Singapore. In both locations, Dr Kendall and Magdalena Douleva appreciated the opportunity to catch up with old friends and new. We thank Franklin Heng and Roderick Martin for organising and supporting the Girton get togethers, and helping to strengthen connections among Girtonians and rekindle the Girton spirit!

With upcoming trips to the US, a return to the Far East, and more planned for 2025, we encourage you to stay in touch and ensure your contact details are kept up-to-date.
