Council has set up a Working Group to advise it on what steps it might take to further knowledge about the relationship between the early years of College and the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade, with its implication for the present day. The Group, which is chaired by the former Mistress, Professor Marilyn Strathern, is due to report in the Easter term of 2022, when the Vice-Chancellor’s Advisory Group on the Legacies of Enslavement will be reporting to the University. Many colleges have taken up the challenge.
Newnham College is sponsoring a series of public lectures, and the next one will be under joint Girton-Newnham auspices. This will be given on 1 June 2021 by Professor Catherine Hall (UCL), on the topic 'Space, Place and Racial Capitalism: Eighteenth Century Jamaica’.
