Exploring Girton's Black History

Exploring Girton's Black History, by Kia Taylor-Powell

'Exploring Girton's Black History' talk at 6pm in the Stanley Library on Thursday 20 October 2022. Our speaker is Kia Taylor-Powell, a second year Geographer at Girton.

Exploring Girton's Black History

During September, Kia researched some of the first ethnic minority students at Girton College. To celebrate Black History Month, she presented 5 of the earliest black African and Caribbean students at Girton and situated the College in its own black historical context. This presentation highlighted the challenges, achievements, and contributions to global history of these pioneering students, and was followed by an interactive discussion.

We hope that all can learn from and be inspired by these ground-breaking Girtonians and we look forward to further celebrations of our cultural history.

Kia Taylor-PowellRecently Kia completed a 4-week internship looking into Girton’s first ethnic minority students. This has fuelled her interest in Black History and Black British politics, as well as the intersectionality between gender, class and ethnicity. Kia looks forward to further projects focusing on different ethnicities and Girtonians around the world.

This video captures Kia's talk as she presented it on the night, which shows her own interpretation and analysis of her findings.
